What equipment do I actually need to install a solar panel system at home?
Looking for advice on the essential equipment for a home solar setup, including panels, バッテリー, inverters, mounting systems, and other components.

I’m researching what equipment is needed to install a solar panel system at home and would like to hear from people who have experience with residential or off-grid solar systems.

I know the solar panels are only one part of the setup, but there seem to be quite a few other components involved. From what I’ve found, the equipment can include a solar inverter, solar battery, チャージコントローラー, mounting system, ケーブル, connectors, and monitoring equipment. I’m trying to understand which components are essential and how they work together.

For someone starting with a basic home setup, what should they consider when choosing solar panel kits or individual components? Does the equipment differ significantly between a grid-connected system and an off-grid setup?

I’m also interested in learning more about solar batteries and how to determine the right battery capacity based on energy usage. For outdoor applications, such as cabins, RVs, or camping, are there particular types of portable solar panels or camping solar panels that are worth considering?

If anyone has installed a system themselves, what equipment would you recommend investing in, and are there any common mistakes beginners should avoid?

I’d especially appreciate recommendations for reliable solar panel equipment and accessories, along with any resources or brands that helped you plan your installation.

The equipment list itself is the easy part and gets covered everywhere — the interesting differences are in how the two topologies interact with the grid.

Grid-tied: your inverter isn't just converting DC to AC, it's synchronizing to grid voltage and frequency and running anti-islanding protection (IEEE 1547 / UL 1741 北米では) — it has to disconnect within a few cycles of a grid outage, full stop, battery or no battery. That's also why your utility requires an interconnection agreement and a bidirectional meter before you can energize it; this isn't a "install and go" システム.

オフグリッド: you drop the synchronization and anti-islanding requirements entirely, but now your charge controller and battery bank have to carry 100% of your load profile, including surge/inrush on motor loads — undersizing the battery for your actual duty cycle (not just average daily kWh) is the single most common beginner mistake.

Two things worth checking before sizing anything: the inverter's rated total harmonic distortion on output (cheap inverters can inject enough harmonic current to cause nuisance issues with sensitive loads), and — if grid-tied — your utility's export limits, since enough residential PV on one feeder segment can cause voltage rise issues at the point of common coupling that has nothing to do with your own equipment.
